Hawaii: Trip Around the Island & Lantern Floating Festival

My cousins took us for a trip around the island.

Koko head hike. A very steep hike straight up the mountain. It sounds like it's like the Grouse Grind in Vancouver. Given that I'm pretty out of shape, we decided we'll try this hike out next time.

Hanola Blowhole Lookout

Rabbit Island

Chinaman's Hat

I have no idea what this is called. It was in a lookout area tucked away in a neighbourhood.

Pu'u o mahuka heiau state historical site- this was the foundation of an ancient temple

Waimea Bay. The water looks beautiful

Holy moses. We went to the Lantern Floating Festival for the first time. I wanted to light a lantern for a loved one who passed away but didn't realize it was going to be this busy. Apparently some people show up first thing in the morning to get a lantern. There was a traditional Japanese ceremony prior to floating the lanterns. Apparently an estimated 40,000 people showed up.

There was something very peaceful and solemn about walking towards the water with thousands of people. I read some of the messages of the lanterns and it made me tear a little.
